It is the second largest city in Switzerland and serves as a major diplomatic location for many of the world's countries. It was the first site of the International Committee of the Red Cross headquarters and the United Nations continues to host a large presence in the city. The majority of residents speak French, but most also speak English, making this a truly cosmopolitan city. It serves as a major entry point for the Swiss Alps. There are many great places to visit and depending on your personal interests, you can design a vacation in Switzerland that will leave you with lasting memories.

Begin your trip by visiting the Jet d'Eau, a fountain that shoots more than 140m high. This fountain began as a release of pressure from the hydro-power plant but became so popular it was turned into a permanent fountain in 1891. The city lights the fountain at night and it is spectacular to behold.

Another wonderful place to visit is the Cathedrale St-Pierre. You can get a pass that allows you to visit all Cour Saint-Pierre sites but start with the Cathedral. This was originally a Catholic church and now includes the International Museum of the Reformation. There is also an interesting archaeological site on the premises and a tour that you can take beneath the cathedral. If you are up to a climb, visit the cathedral towers and take in the magnificent views of the lake and the rest of the city.

You should also visit Old Town, just outside the cathedral. Spend a couple of hours walking around and visit Rousseau's early home and City Hall. Also take a moment to stop in and browse through the quaint antique shops. It is important to note, however, that Old Town sits on a hill and the streets are very steep. Another important site to visit is the Palais des Nations. This building was originally home to the League of Nations and is known for its massive and quite beautiful Assembly Hall. There is a lovely library, an impressive collection of art, and gorgeously landscaped grounds.

Your next stop should be the Quartier des Grottes. Not only is this area known for its shopping, but you must see the les Schtroumpfs, a residential quarter where architects worked hard at avoiding straight lines. Visiting Geneva can be a wonderful experience.
